Audio Reactive Music Video

Introduction

This project describes the music video I created using Touchdesigner for the REBOUND project of the Deuss Music.

Project REBOUND is an initiative of music publisher Deuss Music that aims to inspire animators to create new works of animation based on contemporary music pieces. For this purpose, new music compositions and arrangements were created and recorded.

The music piece I got assigned was by composer Robin de Raaff and was called “Contradiction VI” and was performed by Arjan Jongsma (marimba).

The animation

The freedom of the project allowed me to discover the title of the work in my own terms. The word “Contradiction” took me on an exploration on how the natural and the artificial can blend but also contradict. I choose to make the animation fully in Touchdesigner, using AI image generation together with 3D shapes and 2D textures.

The animation shows a mushroom on which mycelia networks are projected. Zooming out uncovers the pane the mushroom stands on, which exists inside the world as we know it, but inside a universe new to us. Man made textures of streets, parks and buildings blend into natural textures of snakes, eyes and skins.
